Black Necked Stork

Sri Lanka is one of the choicest places on planet earth to do bird watching. With over 400 species recorded, 33 are endemic, found nowhere else on earth !. For an island of it's size , this is an amazing feat . From Kumana to Bundala in the south, waders like the very rare Black-necked stork , Painted storks, Pelicans and Greater flamingos. At Sinharaja , a UNESCO World heritage primary rain forest you can observe 20 or so endemic bird species. Kitulgala with a secondary rain forest you can spot the Blue magpie, Oriental dwarf kingfisher, and the Layard's parakeet. Kalpitiya , about 160 KM north of capital Colombo is famous for its Bar-reef marine sanctuary also acts as a winter home to many migratory waders like Turns and Plovers and Kalametiya about 230 km north of Colombo consists of two brackish water lagoons within a protected mature mangrove swamp which acts as a breeding ground to many waders. It is unimaginable that a busy cosmopolitan city like Colombo has some outstanding bird life with Muthurajawela and Thalangama just 30 minutes away from the city center. These marshes today play a vital role in providing a habitat for more than 120 odd resident and 40 or so migratory species of birds. Recently the government of Sri Lanka established many large wetland parks within Sri Lanka's administrative capital city of Sri Jayawardenapura . Here in downtown Nugegoda and Kotte wetland parks you will be amazed to see Pelicans, Open Bills Storks, Teals, and Painted Stork co- inhibiting with humans as they go about their jogging activity.
